Godzilla and Godzilla Raids Again is a collection of novelizations of the first two Godzilla movies, written by the person who outlined the original stories of those movies. I bought my copy new.
Review:
The two stories in this are pretty basic, not very subtle, and a bit melodramatic. They were okay. I found the first one to be better than the second one. I hadn't seen either of the first two movies prior to reading this, although I've since watched the 1954 Godzilla.
What really made this collection shine, for me, was translator Jeffrey Angles' afterword, which put the stories in context and explained how Kayama originally intended Godzilla to be a warning about the dangers of nuclear war. I can only imagine how frustrating and difficult it was to watch that message essentially morph into "kaiju battles are cool." (But they are cool. I'm so sorry.)
