REVIEW: Super Mario Manga Mania (manga) story and art by Yukio Sawada, translated by Caleb Cook

Super Mario Manga Mania is a tie-in manga based on various Mario games. I bought my copy new.

Review:

This features a selection of stories from the long-running Super Mario-kun manga. They each tie in with various Mario games, including Paper Mario, Super Mario Sunshine, Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Super Paper Mario, Super Mario Galaxy, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii. So...basically a whole manga's worth of stories based on games I've never played.

That said, there were footnotes that explained the basic stories of the games, so I wasn't totally lost, although I might possibly have appreciated the volume more if I'd actually played any of the games referenced.

The Mario of this manga was a little gremlin of a guy who was only willing to do things if there was some benefit for him (although he wasn't meant to be a bad guy, just kind of childish, which makes sense since the manga is aimed primarily at kids). The stories were decent enough, although I didn't find them particularly memorable, and the humor was so-so. The art was good - all the characters were recognizable, and the action was easy to follow.

The final story in the volume was a bit more somber and personal, touching on Sawada's difficulties with having to produce funny stories for the series even while his own father became sick and passed away. I can only imagine how hard it must be to still do creative work, especially comedic creative work, when life is trying to flatten you.

Several comments throughout from Yukio Sawada.
